International Medical Corps – Supporting Health and Psycho-Social Services for Vulnerable Adolescents and Youth in Gondar, Ethiopia

This project is intended to improve the availability of health services to the most vulnerable children and adolescents (aged 10 to 18) in the city of Gondar, one of the poorest urban areas in Ethiopia.  By working with Gondar Health Center, this project seeks to increase the access and availability of health-related services for youths and adolescents, with a particular emphasis on sexual reproductive health (SRH), counseling, psychosocial support and drug/alcohol prevention.  In order to accomplish this goal, International Medical Corps will employ an integrated and holistic approach by refurbishing and furnishing the district’s long-dormant Youth Center which will complement the Health Center’s activities via life skills enhancement, alternative basic education, vocational training, income-generating opportunities, promotion of mental health and psychosocial well-being, peer counseling and disability services. The goal of this project is to create linkages between the Gondar Health Center and Youth Center via referrals and community outreach and to create activities via a community-based participatory approach, incorporating the needs of various stakeholders, which increases awareness and knowledge of sexual reproductive health amongst adolescents.
